Cat 6 is a common choice for modern installations because it gives a strong balance between cost and capability. It suits many offices, retail spaces and homes that need dependable gigabit performance and room for growth.

Cat 6a is often the better option where higher bandwidth, longer-term planning, or more demanding equipment is involved. It is especially useful where clients want to support higher data rates or minimise the need for early upgrades. The trade-off is that it is thicker, less flexible, and usually more expensive to install. That can affect containment size, bend radius, and labour time.

The right answer depends on how the building is used now and what it may need in the next five to ten years. A small office with basic user requirements is different from a multi-room commercial fit-out, a CCTV-heavy site, or a property where major disruption would make future recabling difficult.

Structured cabling matters more than many people realise

A proper structured cabling layout helps keep everything manageable. Instead of ad hoc runs added over time, the system is organised through cabinets, patch panels, outlets and labelled routes. That makes maintenance easier and reduces guesswork during changes or fault diagnosis.

It also gives the building a cleaner foundation for growth. New desks, wireless access points, printers, cameras or phones can be added with less disruption because the core layout has already been planned properly.

Why installation quality matters as much as cable type

Network cabling for homes, home offices and mixed-use properties

Residential cabling is often treated as optional until broadband speeds improve and the internal network becomes the weak link. A fast incoming service does not help much if the connection around the property relies entirely on inconsistent wireless coverage.

In homes, wired cabling can support home offices, gaming, streaming, smart TVs, wireless access points, CCTV and garden room connections far more reliably than WiFi alone. It is also a sensible option during renovations, rewires and extensions, when access is already available and disruption can be kept to a minimum.
